Wix Review 2026: Is Wix Good for a Local Service Business?

WebZum Team•November 5, 2026•12 min read
A gray-haired electrician in a work shirt and leather tool belt sits on the side step of his white work van in a suburban driveway, checking his phone with a laptop and clipboard on his knee, shelves of wire spools and a hard hat behind him and a house with an open garage in the background

TL;DR: Wix is a good website builder if you enjoy designing and want booking, payments and an app store in one place. For a local service business, the catch is the starting point. We opened all 112 templates in Wix’s Services & Maintenance category on November 5, 2026: 110 show the placeholder phone number 123-456-7890, 107 list info@mysite.com, 105 give a made-up San Francisco street address, and every one of the 35 templates with a tap-to-call link dials a placeholder number. You replace all of that yourself. Wix’s paid plans run $17 to $159 a month on yearly plans paid up front (Wix). WebZum takes the other approach: it asks about your business and builds a finished multi-page site, with your details, copy and photos, in about five minutes. You see it free first, then it’s $19/mo (Basic) or $34/mo (Professional, your own domain), month to month.

Disclosure: WebZum publishes this blog and makes a competing AI website builder. Wix facts come from Wix’s own plans page, help center and SEC filings, linked inline. The template check is our own work.

Verified November 5, 2026.

Is Wix good for a small local business?

Yes, for the right owner. Wix is big, established and full-featured, and its templates look professional. It’s a weaker fit if you want the site done for you, because every Wix template starts as somebody else’s fake business.

Wix isn’t going anywhere. Its annual results say it ended 2025 with more than 304 million registered users and 6.11 million premium subscriptions, on $1.99 billion of revenue (Wix results, March 4, 2026, via SEC). That matters when you’re picking a home for your business site for years.

Here’s how we judged it, from the point of view of a plumber, cleaner, roofer or salon owner:

  1. Starting point. How much of the site is yours on day one?
  2. What each plan unlocks. Can you take bookings and payments on the cheap plan?
  3. Lock-in. Can you change the design later or move the site somewhere else?
  4. Getting help. How do you reach a person, and when?
  5. Getting out. Refunds, renewals and what happens when you cancel.

What do you actually start with on Wix?

You start with a well-designed demo for an invented company, filled with placeholder contact details you have to find and replace. We checked every template in Wix’s Services & Maintenance category on November 5, 2026. It had 112 templates, mostly cleaning (20), handyman (18), electrician (17), plumbing (15) and roofing (15). We loaded each template’s public demo home page and counted what was on it.

What we found on the home page Templates (of 112)
Placeholder phone (123-456-7890 or similar) in the text 110
“info@mysite.com” as the email 107
“500 Terry Francine Street” as the address 105
“© 2035 by [invented company]” in the footer 111
Leftover editing text like “I’m a paragraph. Click here to add your own text” 23
A tap-to-call link 35 (every one dials a placeholder number)
A “Book Online” or “Book Now” button or menu item 22

Method: home page HTML of each template’s public demo, fetched November 5, 2026, with three demos also rendered in a desktop and a phone-size browser to confirm the same text shows on screen. Home pages only; inner pages weren’t counted.

The median home page had 4 placeholder spots to fix (phone, email, address, footer), and the worst had 39. The median page carried about 336 words of sample copy written for a business that doesn’t exist, which you’ll want to rewrite in your own words for your own town.

None of this is a flaw in Wix. A template is meant to be edited. But it tells you what “building a Wix site” means for a busy owner: the design is done, the business part isn’t.

Where do the placeholder details hide?

Inside the call buttons, not just in the text. This is the part that’s easy to miss. In 5 of the 35 templates with a call link, the number the button dials didn’t match the number shown on the page. Two handyman templates show 123-456-7890 but their call links dial a different dummy number. A flooring template shows no phone number at all; it lives only inside the “Call Today” button.

So if you build on a Wix template, don’t stop at changing the visible phone number. Tap every call button on your phone before you publish. A call button that rings nowhere costs you the exact customer the site was for.

Which Wix plan does a service business need?

Light ($17/mo on a yearly plan) if you only need a site on your own domain; Core ($29/mo) or higher if you want online booking or payments. Wix’s plans page listed Light $17, Core $29, Business $39 and Business Elite $159 per month on November 5, 2026, and says “displayed prices are for yearly subscriptions, paid in full at the time of purchase” (Wix plans). “Scheduling and services” and “Accept payments” appear only on Core and up.

Wix’s help center is direct about it: “if you purchased the Light plan, you won’t be able to accept payments through your site” (Wix Help). On a free site you can show your services, but to let clients book them you have to upgrade (Wix Help). So if you keep one of those 22 “Book Online” templates, budget for Core.

A free Wix site works for testing, but it “includes a Wix banner ad at the top and has a Wix favicon in the browser tab,” and removing them takes a paid plan (Wix Help). We covered month-to-month prices, add-ons and renewals in our Wix pricing breakdown, so we won’t repeat them here.

Can you change your Wix design later?

Not by switching templates. Wix says: “it’s not possible to switch to a different template for a site you already created.” The fix is to start a new site and move things over by hand (Wix Help). Wix also says that if you started from a template, “you cannot switch to AI for that site” (same page).

The phone view is its own job too. Wix builds a mobile version from your desktop site automatically, but “changes to your desktop site affect your mobile site, while changes to your mobile site do not affect your desktop site” (Wix Help). In practice that means checking and tidying two layouts.

Can you move a Wix site to another host?

No. Wix says your site “needs to be hosted and operated on Wix’s servers”; you can connect a domain bought elsewhere, but the site itself stays on Wix (Wix Help). If you leave, you rebuild. Our Wix hosting review goes further into what free Wix sites look like and what happens when you stop paying, and Wix domains covers taking your domain with you.

How good is Wix customer support?

Better than most builders on paper: English phone callbacks 24/7, at no charge. Wix’s help center lists English callbacks as “24/7” and English live chat as “Monday-Friday 2AM-6PM EST,” and says “Wix does not charge you for phone, chat, or email support” (Wix Help, checked November 5, 2026). There’s no number to dial; you log in, describe the problem and request a call.

What are Wix’s refund and cancellation rules?

14 days for a full refund on a new plan, and renewals aren’t covered. Wix’s refund policy “does not apply if” you’re “requesting a refund for a plan renewal” or an upgrade, and says to “allow up to 45 business days” for a refund to process. Domains don’t get the 14-day guarantee (Wix Help).

Two details catch people. A site plan “may renew up to 3 weeks before the expiration date,” and cancelling the plan “does not cancel any domain, business email, or app subscriptions,” which you cancel separately. When a cancelled plan runs out, your address goes back to a wixsite.com URL “and Wix ads appear on your site” (Wix Help).

Renewals are the default: Wix’s annual report says “substantially all of our premium subscriptions renew automatically,” and about 83% are yearly or multi-year (Wix 2025 annual report, SEC). Put the renewal date in your calendar.

Wix vs WebZum for a local service business

Wix gives you more design control and built-in booking; WebZum gives you a finished site with your own details and month-to-month billing. Here’s a side-by-side:

Wix WebZum
Day one A template for an invented business; you replace contact details and copy A finished multi-page site written for your business in about 5 minutes
See it before paying Yes, free plan (Wix banner ad, wixsite.com address) Yes, 30-day free preview on a webzum.com address
Cheapest plan on your own domain Light, $17/mo, paid yearly Professional, $34/mo, month to month (domain registration covered up to $20/yr)
Cheapest paid plan Light, $17/mo, paid yearly Basic, $19/mo, month to month (webzum.com address)
Online booking and payments Built in, Core ($29/mo) and up No built-in booking; add an outside booking or payment widget by asking the editor
Change the look later No template switching; rebuild on a new site Ask for new colors or fonts in the editor chat; undo by asking
Refund window 14 days, new plans only 30 days, every plan

Wix figures from the Wix pages linked above, checked November 5, 2026. WebZum: Basic $19/mo and Professional $34/mo, monthly billing.

When should you pick Wix instead?

Pick Wix if you like designing, want booking and payments built in, and you’re fine paying a year up front. Wix’s Light plan is cheaper than WebZum Professional for a site on your own domain if you prepay, and Core gives a salon or cleaning company real online booking that WebZum doesn’t build in. Wix also has a huge app store and more layout control than an AI-built site. If you’d rather start with Wix’s AI than a template, read our Wix AI website builder review, or compare the two big DIY builders in Wix vs Squarespace.

Pick something else if you don’t have the evenings to replace the placeholder details, check two layouts and rewrite about 300 words of sample copy.

How does WebZum handle the part Wix leaves to you?

WebZum skips the template stage. Here’s what happens:

  1. Describe your business on the home page, or paste your Google Business link, and answer about four quick questions.
  2. WebZum builds the site in about five minutes: several pages, copy written around your trade and town, photos and a logo. If you haven’t given something, like your hours, the page says “Hours to be added by the owner” instead of making it up.
  3. Fix details by typing them. Ask the editor to change your phone, hours or address, tap “Update business info,” and the site updates in about 30 seconds. On our eight demo sites, every page had at least one tap-to-call link.
  4. Preview it free for 30 days, then keep it on Basic ($19/mo) or move to Professional ($34/mo) for your own domain and no WebZum badge. Every plan has a 30-day money-back guarantee.

The honest limit: if you need online booking built into the site itself, Wix’s Core plan does that and WebZum doesn’t. More comparisons on WebZum vs Wix.

Frequently asked questions

Wix review: is Wix worth it in 2026?

For an owner who enjoys designing and wants booking and payments built in, yes. For a busy service business owner, plan for real setup time: in our November 2026 check, 110 of Wix’s 112 Services & Maintenance templates came with a placeholder phone number, and most also had a fake email and address to replace.

Is Wix good for a plumber, cleaner or electrician?

It can be. Wix has dozens of templates for those trades, and Core ($29/mo yearly) adds online booking. But every template starts as an invented business, so you supply your own phone, address, service area and copy, and you check that every call button dials your real number.

How much does Wix cost for a small business?

Wix’s plans page listed $17 (Light), $29 (Core), $39 (Business) and $159 (Business Elite) a month on November 5, 2026, for yearly plans paid in full up front. Booking and payments start at Core. Our Wix pricing post covers monthly billing and extras.

Can I get a refund from Wix?

Yes, within 14 days of buying a new plan. Renewals and upgrades aren’t covered, domains don’t get the 14-day guarantee, and Wix says refunds can take up to 45 business days to process.

Can I switch my Wix template later?

No. Wix says you can’t switch templates on a site you’ve already created. You’d start a new site and move your content over.

What’s a good alternative to Wix for a local business?

If you want the site written for you, WebZum builds a finished multi-page site in about five minutes, free to preview, then $19/mo (Basic) or $34/mo (Professional, your own domain), month to month. If you want design control and built-in booking, Wix or Squarespace fit better.

The bottom line

Wix is a capable, safe choice, and its templates look the part. What a review page rarely tells you is that the template is a stranger’s business card: fake phone, fake email, fake address, a footer dated 2035. If you have the evenings to make it yours, Wix is good value on a yearly plan. If you’d rather start from a site that already has your business on it, see what WebZum builds for you first.
