Wix Domain: What It Costs After the Free Year (2026)

WebZum Team•October 31, 2026•14 min read
A salon reception counter on moving day: an open cardboard box with a sage green apron, scissors and a small succulent, a ring of keys, a blank brass nameplate and a cup of coffee, with a styling chair and round mirror behind

TL;DR: A Wix domain is free for the first year only with your first yearly (or longer) Wix plan. After that, a .com renews at $21.35 a year on Wix’s own price cards (checked October 31, 2026), privacy costs extra, and domain payments aren’t refundable. You can keep a Wix domain and use it with any website builder by pointing it or switching its nameservers. In our check of 48 extensions on Wix’s price cards, 15 renewed higher than they started. To use yours with WebZum, transfer it to a registrar that accepts four nameservers, then connect it on Professional ($34/mo) — Wix’s nameserver form only takes two, and WebZum needs four. See your new site with a free preview before you pay.

How much does a Wix domain cost after the first year?

A .com from Wix costs $7.90 for the first year if you buy it on its own, or $0 with the free voucher, and then renews at $21.35 a year. That’s from the price cards on Wix’s domain pages, which on October 31, 2026 listed .com at $7.90 a year with the line “Get this domain free for a year with any annual website plan. Renews at $21.35” (Wix). We loaded those pages from a US connection, logged out.

Wix isn’t consistent about this. Its blog post on what a Wix website costs (updated October 20, 2026) says .com renews “at $13.35 per year” (Wix Blog). The number that counts is the one under Domains in your Wix account. Budget for $21.35.

Three billing rules to know before year two:

  • It renews a month early. Wix charges domains “30 days prior to the expiration date,” and site plans on yearly billing up to three weeks early (Wix Help Center).
  • There’s no refund window on domains. “Domain subscriptions are non-refundable and do not include a 14 day money-back guarantee or trial period” (Wix Help Center). The 14-day guarantee covers the site plan only.
  • Missing a payment gets expensive fast. A Wix domain that isn’t paid for gets a grace period of about 30 days, when you can renew “for no additional fee.” After that it goes into redemption, and Wix’s payment-failure page says “The cost of retrieving a domain during the redemption period is $100” (Wix Help Center). Its life cycle page says the fee can vary and shows on your Domains page.

Who gets the free Wix domain, and what doesn’t it cover?

The free domain comes with your first yearly or multi-year Wix plan, and it covers one year of registration and nothing else.

Wix’s voucher page spells out the limits. You get “a 1 year free domain voucher with the initial purchase of selected yearly or multi-year Premium or Studio plans.” It isn’t included “when renewing a plan or upgrading an existing plan,” you have two months from buying the plan to claim it, and you have to enter a card even though year one is free, so Wix can “process renewal payments” later. It “does not include privacy protection” (Wix Help Center). If you pay monthly, there’s no voucher at all (Wix Help Center).

The yearly plans that come with it are Light at $17 a month, Core at $29, Business at $39 and Business Elite at $159, all “for yearly subscriptions, paid in full at the time of purchase” (Wix, checked October 31, 2026 from a US connection). We break those down in Wix pricing for 2026.

On the free Wix plan you can’t use a domain at all. Your site lives at an address in the format “siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress,” and Wix answers “Can I connect a domain to a free Wix site?” with a plain “No” (Wix Help Center).

What did we find on Wix’s own domain price cards?

The renewal price depends a lot on which ending you pick, and Wix’s “free for a year” labels go further than its own voucher rules.

On October 31, 2026 we pulled the price cards from 25 of Wix’s domain extension pages, the ones a local business would look at (.com, .co, .biz, .pro, .services, .llc and so on), plus its domain privacy page, from a US connection with no account. Together they listed 48 extensions, each with a first-year price and a “Renews at” price. We then checked each one against the list of eligible extensions in Wix’s Help Center article on the free voucher. Card prices don’t include tax.

Extension First year Renews at On Wix’s voucher list?
.com $7.90 $21.35 Yes
.net $11.90 $22.90 Yes
.org $6.90 $22.90 Yes
.online $6.90 $40.90 Yes
.biz $7.90 $35.90 Yes
.co $14.90 $48.90 No
.pro $14.90 $44.90 No
.company $22.95 $22.95 No
.llc $29.95 $29.95 No

What stood out:

  1. 15 of the 48 extensions renew higher than they start. The other 33 cost the same every year. The biggest jumps were on cheap-looking endings: .online and .shop go from $6.90 to $40.90, and .biz from $7.90 to $35.90. A .com goes up 2.7 times, from $7.90 to $21.35.
  2. The “free for a year” label is on almost everything. 47 of the 48 cards carried the same line, “Get this domain free for a year with any annual website plan.” But 27 of those 47 aren’t on the voucher list in Wix’s Help Center, including .co, .pro, .company, .llc and .business. Wix’s voucher page also says it only comes with “selected” plans, not “any.” We can’t tell from the outside which one Wix’s checkout follows, so if the free year matters to you, check the voucher in your Wix account before you pick an unusual ending.
  3. Trade endings cost much more up front. The extension pages list .services from $18.90, .construction from $42.90, .contractors from $53.99 and .cleaning from $94.90 a year. A plain .com is still the cheapest and the easiest for customers to remember.

Is privacy included with a Wix domain?

Not by default. Wix’s help center says “you can choose to pay an additional fee for private registration,” so your name and contact details stay out of public WHOIS lookups. You can only add it when you buy the domain or when you extend it by at least a year, not partway through, and “The fee for private registration is not refundable” (Wix Help Center). The free voucher doesn’t cover it either.

Here too Wix’s pages don’t agree. The FAQ on Wix’s .com page says “Included in your domain plan are key features like domain privacy protection” (Wix). Go by the help center and your cart. If you see a privacy line with a price at checkout, it isn’t included.

Who is the registrar for a Wix domain?

Wix itself, for .com and .net. Wix says it “is an ICANN-accredited registrar for .com and .net domains, and a reseller for the other domain extensions it offers” (Wix Blog). IANA’s registrar list shows “Wix.com Ltd.” as accredited registrar 3817 since July 26, 2018 (IANA). For other endings, Wix’s legal pages include a registration agreement where Wix acts “as reseller for Tucows Domains Inc.” (Wix).

This matters if a renewal slips. Wix’s domain life cycle page says Wix “resells domains from a 3rd party registrar which has the right to privately auction the domain within the last 10 days of the grace period,” and that getting a domain back from redemption “is not guaranteed” (Wix Help Center). Keep the card on file current.

What happens to my Wix domain if I cancel my Wix plan?

The domain stays yours, but it comes off your site. When a Wix plan expires, “your site will revert to a free Wix URL, and any custom domain connected will be disconnected,” and the site shows Wix ads (Wix Help Center).

The domain is billed separately: “Canceling your site plan does not cancel any domain, business email, or app subscriptions” (Wix Help Center). So if you’re moving your website, the domain keeps renewing while you point it somewhere new.

Can I use a Wix domain with another website builder?

Yes. Wix says “You can connect a domain purchased from Wix to any site, even if it’s hosted on another platform” (Wix Help Center). The domain stays registered at Wix either way. There are two ways to do it:

  • Point it. In Wix, open Domains, then Manage DNS Records, add the A record and the www CNAME record your new host gives you, and delete the old ones so they don’t conflict (Wix Help Center). DNS changes can take up to 48 hours.
  • Switch the nameservers. In the same DNS screen, choose Use custom nameservers and enter your new provider’s. Wix asks you to unassign the domain from your Wix site first. After the switch, “Wix no longer manages your domain’s DNS,” which affects your site, SSL certificate and mailboxes, and email stops working “unless your new DNS provider has the correct MX records” (Wix Help Center).

That last line is the one to watch. Wix sells Google Workspace mailboxes from $7 per mailbox per month, with Standard at $14 and Plus at $22, on yearly billing (Wix). Those mailboxes keep working after a move only if the MX, SPF and DKIM records end up wherever your DNS lives now. Our guide to getting a business email covers the options.

How do I connect a Wix domain to WebZum?

You see the new site first and move the domain last, so nothing your customers use changes until you’re ready.

Start with a free preview: tell WebZum your business name, where you work and how customers reach you, and in about five minutes there’s a multi-page site at a webzum.com address for you to look over. When you want your domain on it, pick Professional ($34/mo, month to month).

There’s one real catch with a Wix-registered domain. WebZum’s connect screen gives you four nameservers (that’s how our DNS is set up). Wix’s custom-nameserver form only has two fields and “requires both” (Wix Help Center). You can’t paste all four there, and you shouldn’t enter two of four and hope.

The clean path is to transfer the domain to a registrar that accepts four nameservers, then connect it on Professional. Before that switch, WebZum copies your existing MX, SPF, DMARC and DKIM records for the mail provider we detect, plus known subdomains, into your new DNS, so Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 keeps delivering in most cases. The exception is sending services like Amazon SES or Postmark, whose DKIM records have random names we can’t find on our own; add those again if you use one. SSL and DNS for the site are set up automatically.

If you’d rather keep the name registered at Wix for now, ask in WebZum chat before you change anything — we’ll walk you through it. Don’t guess at DNS settings.

If you’d rather drop Wix completely, Professional can instead include a domain WebZum registers and pays for (up to $20 a year), but for a name you’ve had for years, transferring once and connecting is usually simpler than starting over.

Should I transfer my domain away from Wix instead?

For a Wix-registered domain, transferring is the clean connect path, because Wix’s nameserver form only takes two of the four nameservers WebZum needs. Transfer if you want WebZum managing DNS end to end, or if you want to stop dealing with Wix entirely. If you’re stuck on the 60-day lock or want another option, ask in WebZum chat and we’ll walk you through it.

If you do transfer, Wix’s steps are: go to Domains, choose Transfer away from Wix, then “I Still Want to Transfer,” and Wix emails an authorization (EPP) code “to your domain’s registrant contact email address.” Wix recommends turning off private registration first so you don’t miss the emails. A transfer “usually takes up to 7 days,” and you can’t transfer within 60 days of buying the domain, changing the registrant contact details, or a previous transfer. After the move, “You need to add the MX records again” for your business email to work, and “Future domain renewals will be subject to the pricing of your new domain host” (Wix Help Center).

If the 60-day lock is in the way, ask in WebZum chat before you change DNS at Wix — Wix’s own help center talks about pointing the domain while you wait (Wix Help Center), and we’ll tell you what works for your account. If you’re choosing a new registrar, how to buy a domain name covers what the big ones charge after year one.

How does a Wix domain compare on renewal price?

Where the .com is registered Yearly price for a .com after the first year
Wix $21.35 on Wix’s price cards (a Wix blog post says $13.35), privacy extra
GoDaddy $22.99 per additional year
Namecheap $18.48 renewal, privacy free
Porkbun $11.08 register and renew
WebZum Professional Included while you’re on the plan ($34/mo, covers a domain up to $20 a year), or connect the one you have

GoDaddy and Namecheap were checked on their US pages on October 28, 2026 (GoDaddy, Namecheap), and Porkbun on October 31 (Porkbun). Every registrar’s .com cost goes up from November 1, 2026, when the registry fee rises to $10.97 (ICANN), so expect some of these to move.

Wix is near the top for a .com renewal, but the gap is a few dollars a year. If your domain is already at Wix and working, there’s no rush to move it.

FAQ

What is a Wix domain?

A Wix domain is a web address, like yourbusiness.com, that you register through Wix instead of a separate registrar. For .com and .net, Wix is the registrar itself. You own the name, and you can use it with a Wix site or point it at a site built anywhere else.

How much is a Wix domain after the first year?

A .com renews at $21.35 a year on Wix’s price cards (October 31, 2026), and Wix charges it 30 days before the expiration date. Privacy is extra, and domain payments aren’t refundable.

Does a monthly Wix plan come with a free domain?

No. The free domain voucher only comes with the first purchase of a yearly or multi-year plan. Monthly plans don’t get one.

Can I keep my Wix domain if I leave Wix?

Yes. Canceling your Wix plan doesn’t cancel the domain. Keep it at Wix and point it at your new site, or transfer it once it’s past the 60-day lock.

Is Wix domain privacy free?

Wix’s help center calls it an additional fee, added only when you buy or extend the domain. One Wix marketing page says it’s included, so check your cart.

Can I use my Wix domain with WebZum?

Yes, on the Professional plan ($34/mo). WebZum gives four nameservers and Wix’s form only takes two, so the clean path is to transfer first, then connect — WebZum copies your email records over before the nameserver switch. Ask in chat if you need another option. You can see your site free before you pay.

Keep the domain, upgrade what it opens

Customers already know your domain, so keep it. What you can change in an afternoon is the site it leads to. WebZum builds an agency-quality website for your business in about five minutes, for far less than an agency charges, from a few answers about your business. Look it over for free, and only connect your Wix domain once you’re happy with it. Professional is $34 a month, month to month, with a 30-day money-back guarantee and no hidden fees.
