GoDaddy Domain: What a $0.01 .com Really Costs in 2026

WebZum Team•October 31, 2026•13 min read
A copper coin and a brass key on a ring on a worn walnut shop counter beside a leather wallet, with a strip of blank receipt paper curling off a small roll toward a coffee mug and rows of hardware drawers in the background

TL;DR: A GoDaddy .com is advertised at $0.01, but GoDaddy’s .com page adds “3-year purchase required. Additional year(s) $22.99” (checked October 31, 2026). So you pay about $46.59 on day one, including ICANN fees, and GoDaddy’s terms say it then auto-renews for another three years at the $22.99 list price. Privacy is free. Domain Protection and email cost extra. You don’t need GoDaddy’s website to use the domain: keep it there and point it at any site. With WebZum you see your new site free first, then connect the GoDaddy domain on Professional ($34/mo, month to month) by entering four nameservers at GoDaddy.

How much is a GoDaddy domain, really?

A new .com is $0.01 for year one, and that price only comes with a three-year purchase. GoDaddy’s .com page reads “$22.99 $0.01 /1st yr” and, under it, “3-year purchase required. Additional year(s) $22.99” (GoDaddy, US prices, checked October 31, 2026). Its pricing page says the same thing in other words: “Prices starting at $0.01 /1st year for a .com with a 3-year purchase” (GoDaddy pricing).

That $22.99 is also the renewal price. GoDaddy’s renewal and redemption table lists .com at $22.99 to renew, .net at $24.99 and .org at $23.99 (GoDaddy). Its registration agreement explains the rule: unless a different renewal price is shown, renewal is “the same as the list (non-sale) price shown when you search for and select a domain,” which is the crossed-out number, and the “Renewal price subject to change prior to actual date of renewal” (GoDaddy Domain Name Registration Agreement, last revised August 24, 2026).

The .com page’s disclaimer adds that “All prices exclude applicable taxes and fees (including ICANN fees).” ICANN’s fee this year is “USD 0.20 per transaction/year” (ICANN), so three years adds about $0.60, plus sales tax where your state charges it.

Renewals may also creep up. Verisign, which runs the .com registry, is raising its wholesale fee “from $10.26 to $10.97 effective Nov. 1, 2026” (Verisign Q1 2026 results). GoDaddy still showed $22.99 when we checked.

What does a $0.01 GoDaddy .com cost over time?

We tried to price it the way a customer would. On October 31, 2026 we searched GoDaddy for an unused .com, logged out, from a US browser session. GoDaddy’s search results and cart returned “Access Denied” to our automated browser every time, so we couldn’t see what the cart pre-selects. Instead we built the bill from what GoDaddy publishes: its .com page, renewal table, registration agreement, refund policy and email prices. These are list prices before tax, and a real cart may show other promotions.

First 12 months 24 months Cost over 36 months Renewal at end of year 3
Advertised .com price $0.01 n/a n/a n/a
.com on the 3-year deal, with ICANN fees $46.59, all on day one $46.59 $46.59 About $69.57 for three more years
Add one Microsoft 365 Email Essentials mailbox +$23.88 +$131.76 +$239.64 $8.99/mo if it renews at list
Domain plus one mailbox $70.47 $178.35 $286.23 About $69.57 + email

Sources: GoDaddy .com page, renewal table, registration agreement, GoDaddy email, ICANN fee, all checked October 31, 2026. The math is ours.

What the calendar shows:

  1. The $0.01 is really $45.99 paid up front. That’s about $15.53 a year with ICANN fees, a fair price for a .com. The catch is in the next two points.
  2. The renewal is three years, not one. GoDaddy’s agreement says “Automatic Renewal is the default setting” and domains renew “for a period equivalent to the length of your original domain name registration.” So the next charge is $68.97 at today’s list price, plus ICANN fees. To renew a year at a time, the agreement says you can renew manually once to set a new default term.
  3. That renewal is hard to refund. GoDaddy’s refund policy gives 45 days on a one-year auto-renewal, but only 5 days on a multi-year auto-renewal, and 5 days on a new registration (GoDaddy refund policy, last revised September 14, 2026). A newer version, effective October 15, 2026 for customers GoDaddy emailed on September 15, goes further: “GoDaddy does not offer refunds on renewals (manual or auto-renewal), unless expressly stated otherwise” (GoDaddy updated refund policy).
  4. Email is the bigger line. GoDaddy’s cheapest Microsoft 365 plan shows $1.99 per mailbox a month “For 1st 1-year term,” next to a crossed-out $8.99, and the fine print says monthly prices “may require annual or multi-year purchase paid in advance” (GoDaddy email). Over three years, one mailbox costs five times what the domain does.

Is domain privacy free at GoDaddy, and do you need Domain Protection?

Privacy is free. Domain Protection is a paid add-on you can skip.

GoDaddy says Domain Privacy “is automatically included for free with every eligible domain registered with GoDaddy and is turned On by default” (GoDaddy Help). One detail for businesses: “If a Registrant Organization is provided, it becomes the Registered Name Holder per ICANN policy.” If a web designer put their company in that field, they own your domain on paper.

Domain Protection is different. Full Domain Protection sends alerts and requires identity checks for changes like transfers and nameserver edits. Ultimate adds “90 days to renew your domain if it accidentally expires due to failed billing” with “no extra fees to recover your domain” (GoDaddy Help). GoDaddy’s Domain Protection page didn’t show a price when we loaded it logged out (GoDaddy), so you’ll only see the cost in your cart or account.

Before you add it, know that it “will automatically be renewed” along with the domain, per the registration agreement. With Ultimate, the domain “will not be transferable until You elect to downgrade the Domain Protection plan.” And protected domains need a verification code before GoDaddy saves a nameserver change (GoDaddy Help). For most small businesses, the free basics are enough: keep auto-renew on, keep a current card on file, and turn on 2-step verification for your GoDaddy login.

What happens if a GoDaddy domain expires?

Your website and email stop working within five days, and after day 18 getting a .com back costs a $99.99 redemption fee on top of the renewal.

GoDaddy’s standard timeline: it tries to auto-renew on the day the domain expires and again 12 days later. At 5 days past expiration, “the domain will be parked and any connected website or email will stop working.” From day 18 you can only get it back “with an additional redemption fee,” on day 26 it’s listed in GoDaddy’s expired domain auction, and by day 72 it’s gone from your account (GoDaddy Help). The renewal table puts the .com redemption fee at $99.99, and the refund policy lists redemption fees as “Always non-refundable.”

ICANN requires every registrar to warn you at least twice before a domain expires, “approximately one month” and “approximately one week” ahead (ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy). Those emails go to the address on your GoDaddy account, so keep it current.

Can you use a GoDaddy domain with a website that isn’t GoDaddy’s?

Yes. You can keep the domain registered at GoDaddy and point it at any website. You don’t have to transfer it.

GoDaddy’s registration agreement expects it: “If you plan on using another provider for your website or hosting needs, then you should enter the name servers of such provider.” If you don’t, “GoDaddy will direct your domain name to a ‘Parked Page’” that can carry GoDaddy’s and other companies’ ads (GoDaddy Domain Name Registration Agreement). There are two ways to point it:

  • Change the nameservers. In your Domain Portfolio, choose the domain, then DNS, then Nameservers, then “I’ll use my own nameservers.” GoDaddy warns this moves your DNS away from your GoDaddy account and “may break existing connections to your website or email.” Most changes take effect within an hour, and up to 48 hours worldwide (GoDaddy Help).
  • Keep GoDaddy’s nameservers and edit the records. If your new host gives you an IP address, you edit the A record for “@” in GoDaddy’s DNS, and the www part is a CNAME record (GoDaddy Help). Your email records stay where they are.

To move the domain away from GoDaddy entirely (not allowed in the first 60 days), see our guide to transferring a domain from GoDaddy.

Does GoDaddy accept four nameservers?

Yes. That matters, because some registrars don’t. Wix’s form only takes two, which we covered in our Wix domain guide.

GoDaddy’s help page says “There are always at least two nameservers for a domain” and lists no maximum. Hosting companies’ GoDaddy guides describe an “Add nameserver” link for extra rows; NationBuilder’s has customers enter six (NationBuilder Help).

We also checked the .com registry’s public records (RDAP) on October 31, 2026. A GoDaddy-registered local business domain from one of our earlier samples has four Amazon Route 53 nameservers on file. Route 53 is the DNS service behind WebZum’s four. We haven’t run a GoDaddy domain through WebZum’s connect screen end to end for this post, so if your GoDaddy screen looks different, ask in WebZum chat.

What are your options for a GoDaddy domain?

Your goal What you do at GoDaddy What you keep paying GoDaddy Email risk
Keep everything at GoDaddy Nothing Domain renewal ($22.99/yr list), plus any site and email plans None
New website elsewhere, records only Edit the A and www records Domain renewal Low, mail records untouched
New website elsewhere, new DNS host Switch to “my own nameservers” Domain renewal Mail records must exist at the new DNS host
Leave GoDaddy completely Transfer to another registrar (after 60 days) Nothing after the move Mail records must move with it
WebZum site on your GoDaddy domain Enter WebZum’s four nameservers Domain renewal WebZum copies your mail records over before the switch

WebZum’s row costs $34/mo on Professional, month to month. That’s $1,224 over 36 months, and it covers the website, hosting, SSL and edits. The domain stays registered at GoDaddy, so its renewal is still a GoDaddy bill. If GoDaddy’s builder fits you, our review of the GoDaddy website builder covers its prices, and WebZum vs GoDaddy compares the two side by side. Choose GoDaddy instead if you want your domain, site and email on a single GoDaddy bill and you’re happy building the site yourself.

How do you connect a GoDaddy domain to WebZum?

You change one setting at GoDaddy, after your WebZum site is ready.

  1. Build and look first. Answer a few questions about your business, and WebZum builds a full multi-page site in about five minutes. The preview is free.
  2. Upgrade to Professional and choose to connect a domain you already own. WebZum gives you four nameservers to paste.
  3. At GoDaddy, open the domain’s DNS, then Nameservers, then “I’ll use my own nameservers.” Remove GoDaddy’s entries and enter all four of WebZum’s. If the form only shows two rows, add more. Don’t leave any out. If you have Domain Protection, enter the verification code GoDaddy sends.
  4. Wait for DNS to update, usually within an hour and up to 48 hours. Before the switch, WebZum reads your current DNS and copies your email setup (mail records, SPF, DMARC and DKIM for the mail provider it detects) into the new zone. Sending keys with random names, like Amazon SES or Postmark ones, can’t be found automatically, so you’d add those yourself after the switch. Ask in WebZum chat if you need help with them.

If you turned on DNSSEC at GoDaddy, or step 3 looks different, ask in WebZum chat before you switch. No domain yet? Professional includes a .com that WebZum registers and pays for. Need email on the domain? See how to get a business email. Comparing registrars? See how to buy a domain name.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a GoDaddy domain cost?

A .com is $0.01 for the first year with a required three-year purchase, so you pay $45.99 up front, plus about $0.60 in ICANN fees and any tax. It renews at the $22.99 list price, for three years at a time unless you change the term (GoDaddy, checked October 31, 2026).

Is GoDaddy domain privacy free?

Yes, for eligible domains. GoDaddy says Domain Privacy is included free and on by default, though some endings aren’t eligible. Domain Protection is a separate paid add-on.

Can I use my GoDaddy domain with another website builder?

Yes. Keep it registered at GoDaddy and either change its nameservers to the new host’s or edit its A and www records. You don’t need to transfer it.

What happens if I forget to renew my GoDaddy domain?

At 5 days past expiration your website and email stop working. From day 18 you pay a $99.99 redemption fee on top of the renewal to get a .com back, and after about 72 days it’s gone.

Can I connect my GoDaddy domain to WebZum?

Yes, on Professional ($34/mo, month to month). Keep the domain at GoDaddy and enter WebZum’s four nameservers there. WebZum copies your email records over before the switch, and you can see the site free first.

Start with the site, not the domain

The domain is the cheap part. Even GoDaddy’s full list price is under $2 a month. What customers judge you on is the site the domain opens. So build that first. Give WebZum a few answers about your business, and in about five minutes you’ll have a finished multi-page site, agency quality, for far less than an agency would charge. It’s free to look at. If you like it, point your GoDaddy domain at it on Professional: $34 a month, month to month, no hidden fees, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
