How Do I Add a Video Background to My Website? Use a Short, Silent Clip (or Let WebZum Make One From Your Photo)

WebZum Team•October 13, 2026•10 min read
A cozy bakery storefront at dusk, black-and-white on the left and turning to warm, glowing color on the right.

To add a video background, open your builder’s section or header settings, choose Video, and upload or link a short, silent clip. Keep it short: Squarespace caps uploads at 60 seconds and recommends under 40 (Squarespace Help). And keep it muted, because browsers only reliably autoplay muted video.

Disclosure: WebZum makes one of the builders compared here. Competitor facts link to each company’s own help page, checked October 18, 2026. In WebZum you don’t need footage: your homepage photo becomes a 5-second video while the site builds. See your site free before you pay anything.

Verified October 18, 2026 against the linked sources.

Why add a video background at all?

Because a homepage that moves gets noticed in the first second, and the first second is when people decide whether to stay.

The catch is that most small businesses don’t have the clip. A builder will happily give you a “Video” button. What it won’t give you is a good 10 seconds of footage of your bakery, your job site, or your salon chair. That’s why so many sites end up with the same stock clip of a latte being poured.

How do I add a video background in Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy, Hostinger, Durable, or Framer?

Each one puts it in the section or header settings. The real differences are where the video can come from and what happens on phones.

Builder Where to find it Where the video comes from Worth knowing Source (checked Oct 18, 2026)
Squarespace (7.1) Edit Section → Background → Video Upload (60-second limit), your library, background video library, or a YouTube/Vimeo link Videos “don’t have sound and play on a loop.” Devices in low-battery or power-saving mode won’t show them. Every site gets 30 minutes of video storage Help, updated Aug 20, 2026
Wix Select a strip → Change Background → Video Free Wix videos, Shutterstock purchases, or your own upload Element video backgrounds “do not play on mobile devices” by default; there’s a “Play video on mobile” toggle Help
GoDaddy Websites + Marketing Header → cover media → Video Upload, stock video, or a Vimeo link Header videos “play silently.” “Not all themes allow video.” After 3 uploads or 5 GB you connect a free Vimeo account Help
Hostinger AI Builder (manual mode) Edit section → Background → Video Pexels library only “The video background only supports video Pexels.” To use your own clip, Hostinger suggests a GIF, and warns GIFs may slow your site Help, updated Oct 1, 2026
Durable Banner section → Edit content → Video Durable’s video library or a direct public video URL In section styles, “Video uploads are not supported,” so your own clip has to be hosted somewhere first Help, Section styles (both May 21, 2026)
Framer Insert → Media → Video component Upload or a hosted file, YouTube, or Vimeo Framer says it doesn’t “alter or optimize the video file itself,” so a 4K upload is served at 4K Help
WebZum Nothing to find: it’s made during the build Generated from your homepage hero photo 5 seconds, silent, plays once, then rests on the photo webzum.com

Every builder above can do a video background. If you already have good footage, any of them will work. The column that separates them is the third one: where the clip comes from.

What makes a good video background?

Short, silent, light, and polite. Those four rules come from browser makers and accessibility standards, not taste.

Silent, or it won’t start. Chrome’s autoplay policy is simple: “Muted autoplay is always allowed.” Video with sound needs the visitor to interact first (Chrome for Developers). Framer gives the same warning: “Most browsers only allow autoplay when videos are muted” (Framer Help).

Light, or it slows the page Google measures. Google’s Largest Contentful Paint metric counts a video’s poster image or first frame, “whichever is earlier,” and a good score is “2.5 seconds or less” (web.dev). A still image that shows instantly, with the video on top, keeps that number honest. Framer recommends keeping looping videos under 5 MB, saying most browsers have a 5–8 MB caching limit for media (Framer’s claim, same page).

Short, or you owe visitors a pause button. This is the rule most owners never hear. The web accessibility standard WCAG 2.2 says moving content that starts automatically, “lasts more than five seconds,” and plays alongside other content needs “a mechanism for the user to pause, stop, or hide it.” W3C explains why five seconds: it’s “long enough to get a user’s attention, but not so long that a user cannot wait out the distraction” (W3C, Understanding SC 2.2.2). A looping background clip runs forever. A clip that plays once and stops within five seconds doesn’t run into that rule.

Polite to people who turn motion off. Phones and computers have a “reduce motion” setting, and websites can read it. MDN says the setting signals the visitor prefers an interface that “removes, reduces, or replaces motion-based animations,” because motion “can trigger discomfort for those with vestibular motion disorders” (MDN).

Squarespace’s own design tips point the same way: limit motion in the shot, avoid quick cuts, and use “no more than two background videos per page.”

How does WebZum turn your hero photo into a video?

Automatically, while your site builds. Here’s what happens, described from how WebZum works as of October 2026.

  1. WebZum picks your homepage hero photo first. That can be one of your own photos or one WebZum finds or makes for your business. (Why we start with real business photos: we built an AI that finds your real photos instead of faking them.)
  2. An AI looks at the photo and chooses one natural motion for it. One movement, not a montage.
  3. A 5-second silent clip is rendered in the background while the rest of your site is being written. You don’t wait for it. If it isn’t ready when the site is assembled, your site goes up with the still photo instead of making you wait.
  4. On your homepage, the clip fades in and plays once. Then it rests on the image. The still photo stays underneath the whole time.
  5. Visitors who turn off motion don’t see it. If someone has “reduce motion” switched on, the video is hidden and they get the still photo.
  6. It plays in Safari. We fixed Safari playback on September 29, 2026.
  7. It’s homepage only. Service pages that reuse the same photo stay still, so the motion stays special.

Changing it later works the same way as every other WebZum edit, by asking:

  • Regenerate the hero in the editor and you get a new photo and a new video together, in about 3 minutes.
  • Edit the hero photo in the photo editor (“add a small vase of flowers on the counter”) and a new video is made to match.
  • Swap a different photo somewhere else on the site and the hero video is left alone. A new clip is only made when the photo you replaced is the homepage hero background.

Hero video is on by default for new sites, with no plan restriction. Sites built before late September 2026 keep their still hero until you regenerate it.

When should you skip a video background?

When the clip doesn’t show anything a photo couldn’t, or when you have better footage than any AI would make.

  • Choose Squarespace, Wix, or GoDaddy instead if you already have real footage you love, like a drone pass over a finished roof or a time-lapse of a kitchen remodel. Upload it, keep it short, and add a fallback image. A 5-second clip generated from one photo won’t replace real footage of your work.
  • Choose Durable instead if you’re happy with a library clip and want to pick it yourself.
  • Choose Framer instead if you’re a designer who wants scroll-triggered video and full control over the file.
  • Skip motion entirely if your page is mostly for reading, like a menu or price list, where movement just competes with the text.
  • Choose WebZum if you don’t have footage, don’t want to learn video settings, and want a homepage that moves for 5 seconds and then gets out of the way.

One honest caveat: the motion is generated, so look at it once before you publish. If something looks off, ask the editor to regenerate the hero, and undo works if you change your mind. (Here’s how WebZum’s undo and version history work.)

FAQ

How do I add a video background to my website? Open the section or header settings in your builder, choose Video, and upload or link a short, muted clip. Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy, Hostinger, Durable, and Framer all support it (Squarespace, GoDaddy). In WebZum, a 5-second hero video is made from your homepage photo automatically.

Does a video background slow down my website? It can. Google’s Largest Contentful Paint counts the video’s poster image or first frame, and a good score is 2.5 seconds or less (web.dev). Keep the file small and show a still image first.

Why won’t my background video autoplay? Usually because it has sound. Chrome allows muted autoplay but blocks autoplay with sound until the visitor interacts (Chrome for Developers). Low-power mode on phones can also stop background videos (Squarespace Help).

How long should a website background video be? Short. Squarespace recommends under 40 seconds. Accessibility guidance (WCAG 2.2) requires a pause option for auto-playing motion that lasts more than five seconds (W3C). WebZum’s hero clip is 5 seconds and plays once.

Can I use my own video on a Hostinger site? In Hostinger AI Builder’s manual mode, the video background uses the Pexels library only. Hostinger suggests converting your own clip to a GIF, and warns that GIFs may slow your site (Hostinger Help).
