How Do I Undo Changes on My Website? Use Version History (Squarespace Doesn't Have One)

WebZum Team•October 16, 2026•10 min read
Stacked glass website pages with a glowing green circular arrow, suggesting restoring an earlier version of a site.

To undo changes on your website, restore an earlier version from your builder’s version history. How far back you can go depends on the builder. Squarespace says it has no “auto-save or revision history features,” so once you exit the editor, those changes stay (Squarespace Help).

Disclosure: WebZum makes one of the builders compared here. Every competitor fact links to that company’s own help page, checked October 18, 2026. In WebZum you type “undo that” in the editor chat, and your full edit history is saved. Try edits on a free preview before you pay anything.

Verified October 18, 2026 against the linked sources.

Why is undoing a website change harder than it should be?

Because most builders treat “undo” and “history” as two separate tools, and the first one disappears when you close the editor.

Here’s the usual story. You change your homepage on a Tuesday night, it looks fine, you close the laptop. Thursday a customer says the phone number on the site is wrong. You open the editor and the Undo arrow is gray. Now you need to know whether your builder kept a copy of Tuesday’s site, and for how long.

The answer ranges from “forever” to “a few seconds,” depending on who you build with.

Does Squarespace have version history?

No. Squarespace says so in its own help center. Its lost-content guide says it “doesn’t have auto-save or revision history features when editing” (Squarespace Help, updated Aug 29, 2025).

What it does have:

  • Undo inside one editing session. On version 7.1 the undo arrows work while you edit, even after you click Save. But “When you Exit the page, this ends your editing session, and any changes you made can’t be undone or redone anymore” (Squarespace Help, updated Mar 4, 2026).
  • A 30-day trash for pages and blog posts. Deleted pages and posts can be restored for 30 days. After that they’re gone (Squarespace Help, updated May 5, 2025).
  • Not much else. Blog posts are “the only collection items that can be restored after deletion.” Products, events, and gallery images can’t be brought back (same page).

Squarespace’s own suggestion for content it can’t recover is the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, a third-party site, used “as a reference when you manually rebuild the page.” The workaround Squarespace designers teach is to duplicate a page before you edit it, so you have a backup copy (Using My Head).

How do other website builders handle undo and version history?

Most keep some history. The differences are how long it’s kept, whether it restores everything, and whether you have to republish.

Builder What you can go back to The catch Source (checked Oct 18, 2026)
Squarespace Undo within the current editing session; deleted pages and posts for 30 days “No auto-save or revision history.” Products and gallery images can’t be restored Help
Wix Site History of every save and publish, with who made each change Content in Wix Stores, Blog, Bookings, Events and others “does not revert”; galleries always show the latest version Help
GoDaddy Websites + Marketing Site History; backups are made automatically on major changes like publishing or deleting a section Restoring removes everything after that backup; you publish again to make it live Help
GoDaddy Airo AI Builder History under the AI chat, plus file and database backups “There is no undo button for deletion” of the whole app; you publish after restoring Help
Hostinger AI Builder (manual mode) Backups created when you publish and each time you update “Backups are stored for 30 days”; unpublished sites have none Help, updated Sep 23, 2026
Durable The Undo button in the notification after an edit “Only the most recent change can be undone,” and the button disappears “after a few seconds” Help, May 21, 2026
Framer View-only snapshots you copy and paste from Retention depends on plan: 3 days (Free), 7 (Basic), 30 (Pro), 90 (Enterprise) Help, Pricing
10Web Daily automatic backups you restore from the dashboard “All backups are stored for 30 days” Help
WebZum Your full edit history; type “undo that” in the chat The editor lists your newest 50 versions; older ones are still stored. Publishing needs a paid plan webzum.com

Two details in that table matter more than they look.

“Restore” isn’t always “restore everything.” Wix is clear that a Site History restore brings back pages and design, but not the content inside its apps, like your store products or blog posts. If the mistake was in a product list, a site restore won’t fix it.

Some restores happen in the editor, not on your live site. GoDaddy, Hostinger, and Airo all tell you to publish again after restoring. Until you do, customers still see the broken version.

Hostinger’s AI chat mode has its own twist: its Undo permanently deletes your last message and the AI’s reply, and Restore deletes every message after the point you pick (Hostinger Help).

What happens when you undo a change in WebZum?

You ask for it in plain words, and the live site changes back. Here’s the sequence, described from how the WebZum editor works as of October 2026.

  1. Open your site’s editor. It’s the preview page with a chat box at the bottom.
  2. Type what you want undone. For example: “undo that last photo change.” You don’t have to find a button or remember which version was the good one.
  3. The reply names the change it’s taking back. It tells you what it’s about to undo, so you’re not guessing. In our recorded demo, the undo took about 8 seconds.
  4. Your live site updates. Since September 24, 2026, undo and version switches publish to the live site, not just the editor. Before that, the public site could keep showing the change you’d undone.
  5. If publishing fails, nothing breaks. Since October 15, WebZum publishes the files first and only then switches which version is live. If the publish fails, your old version stays up, and pressing Undo again is safe.
  6. Menus, blog posts, and product lists come back too. Since October 15, every version also saves a copy of your menu items, blog posts, and products, so undoing puts those rows back. (Versions saved before October 15 don’t have that copy, so going back to one of them leaves your lists as they are now.)
  7. Need to go further back? Version history opens in its own window, with a one-line note on each version saying what that edit did. “Changed hero photo” is easier to find than “Version 37, 4:12 PM.”

WebZum keeps your edit history for as long as the site exists. There’s no 30-day cutoff. The editor lists the newest 50 versions, and the older ones stay stored.

Which builder should you choose if undo matters to you?

Pick by how you edit and what you can’t afford to lose. Fair verdicts:

  • Choose Wix instead if you want to drag every element yourself and you like naming or starring versions in Site History. Just know that store, blog, and booking content restores separately.
  • Choose Framer instead if you’re a designer or a small team that wants pixel control and collaboration, and you’re on a plan with enough history for how often you edit.
  • Choose GoDaddy instead if you already run your domain and email there and want automatic backups on major changes.
  • Stay on Squarespace if you love its templates and you’ll get in the habit of duplicating a page before big edits, because once you exit the editor there’s no history to fall back on.
  • Choose WebZum if you’d rather type “change our hours” and “undo that” than learn an editor, and you want your full edit history kept, including menus, posts, and products.

How do I avoid needing an undo in the first place?

Make one change at a time, and check it before the next one.

GoDaddy gives the same advice for its AI builder: vague prompts like “make it look better” “can lead to broader changes than you intended” (GoDaddy Help). In WebZum the same rule helps. “Make the headline shorter” is easier to check, and to undo, than “redo the homepage.”

A few habits that work on any builder:

  • Change prices, hours, and phone numbers on their own. If something goes wrong, you’ll know which edit did it. Our holiday update checklist walks through that kind of edit.
  • Look at the live site after you publish, not only the editor.
  • Know your builder’s history limit before you need it. 30 days, 3 days, and “until you exit” all feel the same until they don’t.

If you’re curious how chat editing works under the hood, see how WebZum’s chat editor replaced drag-and-drop and how we built a live editor that doesn’t break production sites. If you’re weighing the two builders directly, our Squarespace comparison covers more than undo.

What does WebZum cost?

Editing and undo work on the free preview, so you can try them before paying. Publishing needs a paid plan:

  • Basic, $19/month: your site on a webzum.com subdomain, with hosting and SSL.
  • Professional, $34/month: everything in Basic plus a custom .com domain we register for you, and no WebZum branding.
  • 3-year deal: pay for 1 year, get 2 free. $216 for three years of Basic (about $6/month), or $396 for Professional (about $11/month).

There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee.

FAQ

How do I undo changes on my website? Restore an earlier version from your builder’s version history, then publish if your builder requires it. Wix and GoDaddy call it Site History, and Hostinger calls it Manage backups. Squarespace undo only works until you exit the editor. In WebZum, you type “undo that” in the editor chat.

Does Squarespace have version history? No. Squarespace says it “doesn’t have auto-save or revision history features when editing” (Squarespace Help). You can undo within an editing session and restore deleted pages and blog posts for 30 days.

Can I undo saved changes in Squarespace? Yes, until you exit. On version 7.1 you can keep undoing after clicking Save, but once you exit the page, “any changes you made can’t be undone or redone anymore” (Squarespace Help).

How do I restore a previous version of my Wix site? Open Site History from the editor (Site → Site History) or your dashboard, preview the version you want, and click Restore. Content in apps like Wix Stores, Blog, and Bookings doesn’t revert (Wix Help).

How long does WebZum keep my website versions? For as long as your site exists. There’s no automatic expiry. The editor shows the newest 50 versions, and older ones stay stored.

A good undo is the one you never think about. Type your business name and see your site free, make a change, and undo it.
